"Why We Remember"----the Controversy: Reflection

Recently my spouse posted some pictures of our earlier years and the kids on a website and my kids were somewhat shocked by it---one daughter said to me: "Dad, I forget that you were young once." Relax. I just smiled and replied. "Yes.....I had forgotten too."

Our family has just been through a whirlwind of visiting and remembering and celebrating---and going over pictures and stuff. And in the discussion of these memories, I always wonder----do we seniors go over the oldies but goodies to be role models to the youngins????-----the more I think of this role modeling stuff the less I think so---I go over the pictures so that I CAN REMEMBER the BATTLES and that YES, I was YOUNG ONCE".

Sometimes when you get through the battles of life, one can forget what it was all about---and the pictures bring it all back.

When things don't Add up: When the Facts don't Matter: Reflection

Recently while watching a football game, I noticed that the audio track from a certain popular channel just did not match the video---boy did that ruin the game for me. Nothing like being a little delayed to rattle the enjoyment. When things just do not match up...there is a real sense of things being wrong somehow....things need to mesh to make sense in our lives.

Recently, in the political arena, something similar has occured.

There was a theft from a local school district that was discovered in July. Revealed to the public in November. Always need a little delay to model Edward Kennedy and Tiger Woods I presume. The theft was not revealed to local law enforcement it seems, no need to follow proper procedure, but sent directly to the DA, where it seems that the person confessed to $100,000 of theft, while in the alternative pleading "not guilty." We never really plead these days, but plead in the multiple alternative. Right at that point of the story, I hear the sound track going off the road.

But relax...it gets better. The person involved supposedly had a gambling addiction and a $200,000 gambling debt---but not one person, even the DA it seems, worried in the least of where the other $100,000 was. The school that had been stolen from reviewed two years of accounting and then declined to go further in history. They presumably felt so bad about the incident that they did not want to really know the facts...and well,....maybe the DA feels so bad that he does not want to know either.

And that is where we are today---in a place where the FACTS and the LAW do not matter....just the POLITICS and how we FEEL seems to be important.

As I see it there are two phases---determination of facts---as in the old Dragnet movie, the "facts and nothing but the facts" and then in a separate judicial section, the clemency or sentencing. The facts come before the sentencing...at least that is the way the texts teach it.

To do otherwise is to run the car off the tracks, or run the TV with the audio track off kilter---we have run amuck. That is how I see it.

Observer; Reflection: In Difficult Times....Cut from the TOP first

It has been the fashion recently, in times of economic difficulty, to cancel the temporary workers, and the very lowest workers and make them feel the wrath first...when in some corporations, the amount to be saved is so large, that only a total mobilization of the entire corporate spirit will be what saves it.

Thus the rule; In times of crisis...true leaders begin by cutting their own salaries first...they set the example and signal that everyone at all levels will participate in real terms and not just rhetoric.

One of the "signs" of a corporation that has a good chance of success thus...is that the leaders lead. Make a note of it. Those firms are the ones to invest in. Avoid those that do not get it.

Observer:Reflection: In Difficult Times.....Cancel the Travel and Entertainment-----

In difficult corporate times, one of the first categories of expense to be cut is travel and entertainment....the theory is....in times of difficulty....sacrifice is necessary...and then when profits have returned....THAT will be the time to celebrate...and not before.

In some cultures...such as government cultures...this rule is not followed...and the custom of entitlement makes those employed blind to the plight of the general population. Employees feel they are entitled to the perks they have always had...and the paid donuts...and the travel...and all the extras. After all...did not John Maynard Keynes himself say that it was up to government to "fill the gap" during difficult times..and what better gap than donuts could there be??

Thus cutting the budget pertains to others, not themselves....thus...they don't get it when regular folks say "Cut the donuts!!"...Make a note of it.

Transparency is not TWITTER

Recently in the political vortex, it has been fashionable to champion "transparency"-----and the actual tangible improvements have been real, but disappointing----we have gotten TWITTER and streaming of press releases from our elected leaders....but not TRANSPARENCY-----

True transparency would reflect the debate of open meetings----the audio, and the video of the debates about the regulation of Wall Street; Open discussion of the pros and cons of various plans for health care reform. Open meetings on how the hedge funds would have all their transactions made in one open and transparent, and trackable, market system.

We're getting just the sizzle---not the beef. Stay tuned.

OpEd; On Pirates; On Wall Street: On Health Care; Compare and Contrast

Sometime back, our President had a terrible problem with some Pirates---well...they were Somali Pirates, and were intercepting vessels and hijacking them and...well...thumbing their noses at the international navies of the world.

Midst quite a bit of publicity....the US Navy was sent to the rescue, and the sharpshooters took action and knocked the Pirates off in one bold move. It was a bold lesson to be learned for all: When the US governemnt deals with Pirates, they will not tolerate being shaken down, lied to, stolen from etc, etc.

Reel the movie forward----Midst the furor of the AIG bonus scandal, the public erupts with anger at the move of the government to, with a wink and a nod, approve the bonuses to key AIG employees, even as the nation is dealing with the devastation that these employees caused---they are KEY employees? and because they are KEY, even though bad to the bone, we need to keep them in place. Just yesterday it was announced that after all the TWITTER about it, the administration will really not unravel the matrix of greed of Wall Street compensation that has resulted from deregulation, but will rather make some recommendations------One has to ask where all the boldness from the "Pirate Episode" went? Should he have called the Navy to intervene?

Ditto for Health Care-----Ya think the Wall Street pirates are tough? Wait till ya get to those in health care. It's a bad omen. Stay tuned.

Reflection: Nixon-Frost--the movie: The magic of full discussion and debate

Last week while I was on location in Minnesota working on a story, I happened to watch the Nixon-Frost movie with some family and friends. As the movie progressed, I began to wonder whether there would be any action---after all, I had grown accustomed to action, and action every minute Bourne style was best for me.

After a scene where Nixon called Frost on the telephone in the middle of the night, the whole movie became pretty intense and things got complicated---you will have to see the movie and get details. After the first several meetings, it appeared that it was going to be victor and vanquished, Nixon over Frost, and winner take all.

Out of the full discussion came a result the viewer of the movie, or at least me, did not expect. Both parties achieved something positive and surprisingly so.

In the final scene, Frost visits San Cemente on a final farewell, and gives Nixon some shoes. That scene provoked some discussion from the family. What's with the shoes? I will leave you to weigh in on that question.

My take on it all is that when a nation, family or community can have a full, fair, free and open discussion the result is one that elevates everybody. Even locally in our community where there has been decades of closed bikering about cetain issues, when a full, open discussion, and a heatly divided one is held, a healing and positive result is attainted. That should not be a surprise...yet it is surprising because the "lets not talk openly about the issues" folks are the majority of us.

Answer on the First Ring

During the recent Christmas season, I had the pleasure of working some at a catalog firm that sells worldwide-----and after the training which was some of the best I have ever had on telephone sales, the rush of the season began.

From initial greeting to processing of the credit card for the typical sale, the call might last 3.5 minutes. As soon as the call is completed, another is ready. Pretty hard to imagine in these depressed times---but it was exciting for me to experience.

One of the mantras of the firm was "ANSWER ON THE FIRST RING"----Not only was this the rule, you were marked down on the audits of your calls if you ever answered on the second ring.

Callers would constantly say---" I am shocked that you answered the phone on the first ring. That is so unusual."

We live in a world that is unresponsive, distracted, and mostly blocking the reality before it. Truly answering is unusual.

Some years ago---a couple thousand, there was a psalm that went------"My plans for you are peace and not disaster. When you call me, I will answer you."

Kinda makes you wonder whether the old psalmist had some experience in telephone sales. Maybe just some experience in what is the ultimate in Responsiveness.

Anyway---try to answer on the first ring. Trust me. It's a challenge.
